The Virgin Islands are an archipelago of about 50 islands that stretches from west to east, starting about 90 miles east of San Juan de Puerto Rico. The islands, of volcanic origin, are very jagged and sailing is varied and easy: the maximum distance from a landing place or anchorage is three miles. They are divided between the British part (BVI, British Virgin Islands) and the US part (USBVI). The winds are constant from the east and the temperature is pleasant all year round; obviously the dry season is preferable, which runs from mid-November to mid-May. The wet season, in addition to presenting almost daily rains, can be upset by strong hurricanes. The Virgin Islands are therefore the ideal place for a sailing holiday: unspoiled nature, beautiful sea, but also an area that the recent tourist and financial development has equipped with modern and luxurious facilities. The official language is obviously English and the currency is the US dollar. There are three airports, the main one being Beef Island's Terrance B. Lettsome, connected by a short bridge to Tortola (the main island with the capital Road Town). On this island there are two places where our BVI charters offer charter sailing boats: the capital's marina and Nanny Cay. Other departure options for your sailing holiday in the BVI Virgin Islands are in the USA area on the island of St. Thomas, at the marina of the same name or in Red Hook. The 4 starting bases, adding together BVI and USVI, have dozens of sailboats from the best French, German and Scandinavian shipyards, to be chosen both with bareboat formula and with local skipper on board. However, remember that the navigation code is always the USA one! And then ready for a dream cruise, through postcard bays, atolls, beaches of white sand, sailing for relatively calm seas, often protected by the reef. Remember that anchoring is strictly prohibited in coral reef areas (sufficiently signposted). You can circumnavigate Tortola, with its exclusive bays and resorts: anchor in the suggestive bays of Cane Garden Bay, Brewers Bay or Smugglers Cove. Visit the magnificent botanical garden or explore the Sage Mountain Park, climbing to the summit (not very high, but from which you can enjoy a spectacular view). Back on the boat, sail to St. Thomas, St. Croix or the more distant Anegada, surrounded by spectacular coral. In Virgin Gorda there are picturesque granite rock formations close to the sea, the Baths. If you want to relax on dream beaches, don't miss Jost Van Dyke, while for diving enthusiasts, the waters of Salt Island should not be missed: here you can visit the wreck of the steamship RMS Rhone, which sank in half at 25 meters deep. of the nineteenth century with all its precious human load and goods. BVI on a sailing boat is therefore synonymous with a safe nautical holiday for the whole family, in pleasant and exclusive places. Choose the most suitable boat among the dozens of proposals and decide which marina to leave from, the Virgin Islands are waiting for you!
